You’re invited to join the Library Association of Alberta (LAA) and The Alberta Library (TAL) for two upcoming events in The Informed Library, our free professional‑learning series designed for library workers across Alberta.

Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned professional, these sessions offer practical insight, real‑world strategies, and meaningful opportunities to connect with colleagues.

1. The Informed Library: The Art of Persuasion in Practice

This conversational session explores how library professionals can apply ethical persuasion to support change. Through practical examples, we’ll connect communication strategies with change‑management principles and introduce the Patterson‑Connor Commitment Curve as a tool to understand resistance and guide people toward commitment.

In this session, you will:
  • Explore practical approaches to ethical persuasion
  • Use the Commitment Curve to diagnose and address resistance
  • Practice turning objections into productive dialogue
  • Take part in a Q&A with the speakers
  • Leave with actionable strategies to support alignment and momentum in your library
Attending in person? Stay afterward for informal networking and refreshments supported by LAA.

2. The Informed Library: Fundraising & Sustainability

Join us for a dynamic conversation with Tracy Johnson, CEO of the Calgary Public Library Foundation and a national leader in library fundraising. With more than a decade of experience and accomplishments including the landmark $350M Add In Campaign, Tracy brings exceptional insight into the evolving world of library philanthropy.

Under her leadership, the Foundation has grown from 900 to more than 31,000 donors, demonstrating the power of community‑driven fundraising. Tracy will also share the story behind the 2025 Fifth Book Campaign, a bold initiative addressing the rising cost of library materials.

During this session, you will:
  • Explore innovative approaches to library fundraising
  • Learn how to grow and sustain donor communities
  • Hear the story behind the Fifth Book Campaign
  • Gain methods for strengthening donor engagement and public trust
  • Join an open conversation and Q&A on real‑world fundraising challenges
