TYPE OF COMMITTEE:

STANDING COMMITTEE as established by the Library Association of Alberta bylaws.

PURPOSE:

To provide continuing education activities and educational funding for current and potential members of the Library Association of Alberta.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer the following annual LAA scholarships and continuing education grants:
    • Education Endowment Fund Scholarship (students)
    • Continuing Education Grants (members)
  • Administer the following annual LAA Awards:
    • President’s Award (in collaboration with LAA President)
    • Punch Jackson Award of Excellence in Library Service
    • Certificate of Thanks
    • Honorary Membership
  • Provide continuing education activities by:
    • Presenting speaker series, workshops, or other learning opportunities organized by the LAA, its committees, or interest groups
    • Collaborating with provincial and national organizations with similar interests
    • Providing financial support to Alberta libraries and organizations through sponsorship of conferences and other continuing education activities

  • Promote continuing education activities from other organizations that may be of interest to members

COMPOSITION AND APPOINTMENT:

  • The Committee is chaired by a member of the LAA Board of Directors
  • Members at large may volunteer 
  • Members serve a one-year term
  • Members at large are recruited in August of each year
  • While the 2nd Vice President is generally a member, committee membership may change annually 
  • Members of other province-wide associations with interests similar to those of the Association may, when appropriate, be invited to participate on LAA committees
