TYPE OF COMMITTEE:
STANDING COMMITTEE as established by the Library Association of Alberta bylaws.
PURPOSE:
To further the goals of providing barrier-free, inclusive representation for all members of the library and information community.
The purpose of this committee is to:
- Add value to those organizations participating in the Advisory Committee
- Give those organizations a say in creating a representative organization
- Give those with less of a voice access to an advocacy organization
- Give more marginalized library groups an ability to influence on a provincial level
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Highlight advocacy topics and opportunities important to the association and/or community they represent for consideration by the LAA
- Communicate activities and talking points developed by the LAA in response to the committee’s work back to their own association and/or community
- Communicate activities of their own association that may be of interest or benefit from coordination with other associations to the committee
- Identify barriers to inclusion in the LAA within the Alberta library and information community for consideration and discussion by the LAA
- Aid in the execution of board-approved committee recommendations in collaboration with the the LAA board
COMPOSITION AND APPOINTMENT
- This committee is chaired by the 1st Vice President
- A Vice-Chair is selected by the Board from within the LAA Board
- Members are drawn from library and information associations in Alberta to ensure all voices are represented. The Chair reaches out to each of the following associations on an annual basis to recruit members:
- AAAL (Alberta Association of Academic Libraries)
- AALT (Alberta Association of Library Technicians)
- ALTA (Alberta Library Trustees Association)
- APLAC (Alberta Public Library Administrators Council)
- ASA (Archives Society of Alberta)
- Alberta School Learning Commons
- FLA (Foothills Library Association)
- GELA (Greater Edmonton Library Association)
- LISSA (Library and Information Studies Students’ Association)
- MacEwan Library and Information Technology
- NAHLA (Northern Alberta Health Libraries Association)
- PLSB (Public Library Services Branch)
- PNLA (Pacific Northwest Library Association)
- SAHLA (Southern Alberta Health Libraries Association)
- SAIT Library and Information Technology
- SLA (Special Library Association)
- SLIS (University of Alberta School of Library and Information Studies)
- TAL (The Alberta Library)
- LAA invites new members to join annually and any association can put a name forward
- The organizations represented on this committee must be Institutional members of the LAA in good standing
- The representatives of these organizations do not need to be LAA members
- Individual members are recruited from members at large and must be members in good standing
- Members serve a one-year term
- Members are recruited annually in August
