Library Conference
Why doesn’t the Alberta Library Conference in Jasper happen anymore?
The landscape of library conferences in Alberta has undergone significant changes in recent years. For many years, the Library Association of Alberta (LAA), in partnership with the Alberta Library Trustees’ Association (ALTA), hosted the Alberta Library Conference in Jasper. In 2022, the provincial government discontinued a grant funding stream that allowed LAA to fund our yearly conference. This lack of funding, along with pandemic disruptions, and concerns raised by members led to the cancellation of the Alberta Library Conference in 2022. For more information about this decision members can consult the 2022 AGM package which included a report.
Does LAA currently host a conference?
The LAA is proud to partner in the Stronger Together Library Conference. This conference celebrates the Alberta library community and provides a valuable opportunity for connection, learning, and growth. It is a collaborative effort among six partners: The Alberta Library (TAL), Peace Library System, Yellowhead Regional Library, Northern Lights Library System, Library Association of Alberta (LAA), and the Alberta Library Trustees’ Association (ALTA).
The LAA recognizes the importance of annual learning and networking events for the Alberta Library community. We believe conferences are an excellent way to foster collaboration across library sectors, spark innovation, and strengthen our profession as a whole. Given financial and resourcing realities, it is not feasible for LAA to host an Alberta Library conference independently. We believe the way forward is through collaboration and partnership.
The LAA remains dedicated to finding innovative ways to bring learning and advocacy opportunities to libraries across the province, ensuring that the Alberta library community continues to thrive.
