Library Workers Condemn Government Censorship

Statement in response to Bill 28
Published April 2, 2026

Earlier today, Minister of Municipal Affairs Dan Williams announced changes to the Libraries Act that will restrict access to materials in Alberta’s public libraries. The Library Association of Alberta is deeply concerned about this legislation.

The Library Association of Alberta was not consulted on these changes.

The proposed amendments introduce government authority to regulate access to library materials, restrict use based on age, and require the segregation of certain content. These measures create barriers that will limit access for all Albertans.

This is censorship.

Public libraries exist to ensure free and equitable access to information. Library workers are trained professionals, trusted by the public, who already manage collections responsibly. There is no need for government intervention.

LAA will review the legislation and provide further comment in the coming days.
